Car Registration Hack

One of the many perks of the Pensioner Concession Card and Low Income Health Care Card (LIHCC) is discounted car registration.  The discount is applied per card holder, and for couples, this presents an opportunity to have two discounted car registrations (one each).

Where many come unstuck is having all the cars registered in one partner’s name.  A quick hack to make the most of this discount is to transfer the registration of one car to the spouse who may not already have a car in their name.

In Victoria, the cost to transfer a car between spouses is limited to a $42 transfer fee and stamp duty is not payable.

By making this simple change to your ownership structure, you can reduce your annual registration cost by over $300.
